Shropgeek Meetup 06/11/09
I went to my first Shropgeek meetup last night and I have to say, it was a great experience. I wasn't quite sure what to expect – but when I got there I met two very friendly people @KirstyBurgoine and @zbeauvais. We sat and talked for a few minutes before swiftly moving to the back room so we could actually hear each other.
We had the inevitable talk about Twitter. I think it was a fitting topic because Twitter is used to organise the meetups alongside the website. It's great to know that there are people in Shropshire that you can meet and talk to. It's easy to forget that you're not the only one out there. Especially when you're on Twitter talking to people from all over.
Later on @jamiebiddle joined us, followed by Zach's wife and @revdancatt. It was rather funny that most (if not all) of us who went last night had an iPhone. It seems to be a requirement for being a geek!!
We also talked about Google Wave for a little while. I must admit I haven't played with it all that much and was a bit quick to exclaim my annoyance with Google for it. Until Zach chimed in and opened my eyes to gadgets and how they can be useful. Kirsty also mentioned how adding a agdget by URL is a pain, and for "normal users" it could put them off. Although it will probable change by the time it's opened up the everybody. I think we all agreed that most of the force behind Wave was simply it being a new Google product, and ocne that dies down we will see how it goes from there.
There were so many different things we spoke about, it's hard to put them all down. In short: 27" iMacs, Magic Mouse, Twitter, Work, My Book, The Guardian, Previous Shropgeek meetups, Video interviews ;), Waking up, RDFA, RSS, FOWA, Working in London and loads more. I actually learned quite a bit while I was there.
The most interesting thing of the night though was @revdancatt telling us about how the printing presses work at The Guardian. It was interesting to know that the paper goes through the printer at 33mph and that the blades have to be replaced every two days because the paper blunts them. The funny thing about this is that I have no interest in newspapers whatsoever; I was just interested in the numbers. I find it very interesting to know how things work, and the things he was telling us was just brilliant and I emjoyed listening to what he was saying.
I just know I've probably missed something – I've rewritten this post twice already!
To all that went, it was great meeting you all I and can't wait to meet you again.
